What Affects Storage?
Camera Count
More cameras require more storage and more network bandwidth.
Resolution
2MP, 4MP, 5MP, 8MP / 4K, 12MP, 16MP, and 32MP cameras use different storage amounts.
Recording Schedule
24/7 recording uses more storage than motion, event, or scheduled recording.
Bitrate & Codec
H.265, smart codec, bitrate, FPS, and scene activity can change storage usage.
Quick Storage Estimates
32MP High-Resolution Camera Bitrate Planning
32MP cameras, panoramic cameras, and multi-sensor cameras can use much higher bitrate than standard 4MP or 8MP cameras. Storage and network planning should allow extra headroom, especially for 24/7 recording, high frame rate, wide scene coverage, busy scenes, or multiple users viewing remotely.
32MP Planning Tip: A single 32MP camera may use as much storage as several standard cameras. Always confirm the actual camera bitrate, compression, frame rate, scene activity, and recorder capability before choosing hard drive size.
Storage Calculation Formula
Step 1: Daily Storage
Daily GB = Bitrate Kbps × Cameras × Hours Per Day × 3600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1024 ÷ 1024
Step 2: Total Storage
Total GB = Daily GB × Number of Days
Total TB = Total GB ÷ 1024
Retention Days
Estimated Days = Installed Storage GB ÷ Daily Storage GB
Network Requirements
1–4 Cameras
100 Mbps minimum may work for small systems. Gigabit is still preferred for smoother performance.
8–16 Cameras
Gigabit network is recommended. Plan PoE budget, uplink speed, and NVR bandwidth carefully.
32+ Cameras
Use a planned camera network, proper switches, uplinks, storage, and bandwidth design.
32MP Cameras
Gigabit network, H.265 / smart codec, and properly planned recorder incoming bandwidth are strongly recommended.
Remote Viewing Tip: You do not always need extremely fast internet, but you do need stable upload speed at the camera/NVR location. Viewing fewer cameras or using sub-stream can improve remote viewing performance.
Storage Optimization Tips
Use H.265 / Smart Codec
H.265 and smart codec options may reduce storage usage compared to older compression settings.
Adjust Bitrate
Lower bitrate can reduce storage usage, but setting it too low may reduce image quality.
Use Motion Recording
Motion or event recording can reduce storage usage compared to full 24/7 recording.
Use Sub-Stream Remotely
Sub-stream can help remote viewing run more smoothly when internet upload speed is limited.
