Success story · Alexandria, Virginia
Multiple buildings. One coordinated security system.
An apartment community in Alexandria, VA needed a coordinated view of activity across separate buildings, shared spaces and vehicle lanes. NSI Security helped its client plan wireless connections and centralized video, giving property management a practical way to review the community from one place.

The challenge
A property that needed a connected plan.
The project began with a property owner’s question to our client: could a security system serve an entire apartment complex?
With multiple buildings spread across the property, running wired connections between them was impractical. The client needed a way to connect those locations and give property management a coordinated view of the community.
NSI helped develop the network layout and infrastructure design around that requirement, supporting our client’s project with a plan for building-to-building connectivity and centralized video.

Our approach
Wireless connections between buildings.
The design uses point-to-point wireless bridge links to connect the buildings to a shared network. This provides a path for camera traffic without requiring wired runs between every building.
NSI’s planning focused on the network layout, dependable connectivity and efficient use of bandwidth. We also provided system architecture, configuration guidelines and integration advice to help our client bring the components together.
NSI proactively monitors the wireless bridges so connection issues can be identified and troubleshooting can begin promptly.

The result
Give property management a view across the community.
On top of the wireless network, NSI helped our client plan a centralized video system that brings camera feeds from the buildings into a single dashboard. Property management can check shared spaces, parking areas and other covered locations together, then review relevant views when a concern is reported.
The architecture also provides a foundation for future expansion. Additional cameras or buildings can be considered as needs change, with network capacity, coverage and recording requirements reviewed as part of each expansion.
License-plate recognition
More context for vehicle-related incidents.
The project also incorporated two license-plate recognition systems per lane. Together with the community’s camera views, plate information gives property managers more context when reviewing vehicle arrivals and departures, suspected unauthorized access and illegal dumping.
Plate records can be reviewed alongside relevant camera footage to help investigate an incident. Recognition performance depends on camera placement, lighting, vehicle movement and system configuration.
