Set Up an LPR Camera in 5 Visual Steps
A readable license plate matters more than a wide scene. Follow the pictures, then test a moving vehicle in daylight and at night.
BEFORE YOU START
Use the right camera for the job
An LPR camera should focus on plate capture in a controlled lane. Keep a separate overview camera if you also need a wide view of the property.

Five pictures to get the capture right

Aim at one lane
Keep the plate large, level, and near the center. Avoid a wide overview angle.

Draw the blue detection area
In Live View, mark only the part of the lane where vehicles should be detected.

Match the red frame to the plate
Park a vehicle in the blue area. Use optical zoom until the red frame fits the plate.

Choose the travel direction
Select Entry, Exit, or Both when the camera model provides this option.

Test a moving vehicle—day and night
The plate must stay readable while the vehicle moves. Recheck focus, glare, and framing before finishing.

See detected plate numbers on the NVR screen
After adjusting the camera, confirm the result at the recorder. On a compatible LPR system, recognized plate numbers should appear with vehicle captures as traffic passes through the configured lane.

- Confirm LPR integration
Verify that the camera recognizes plates and that the recorder supports receiving its plate events. A working video connection alone does not confirm plate-recognition support.
- Open the smart live view
On supported UNV NVRs, right-click Live View, choose Preview Mode → Smart, and select motor-vehicle results. Check Smart Display Configuration → Alarm Subscription and the camera’s VCA configuration if results are missing.
- Check a passing vehicle
Drive a test vehicle through the lane. Open the new capture and compare the recognized number with the plate image. Confirm the camera channel and timestamp, then repeat in daylight and at night.
Video is visible, but plate numbers are missing? Check camera/recorder compatibility, plate-event integration, recognition settings, and event subscriptions. Not every passing vehicle will produce a correct plate read; verify the saved result before completing the installation.
Dedicated Vehicle Recognition screen
Some NVRs also provide a Vehicle Recognition screen with a Vehicle Records list, plate numbers, capture times, and a selected vehicle snapshot. Follow that model’s Plate List and Plate Comparison setup before using this view.

Confirm before changing settings
- Record the exact camera model, recorder model, and both firmware versions.
- Confirm the required country, plate format, vehicle direction, and capture goal.
- Use the integration method documented for that exact camera and recorder combination.
Options vary by model and firmware
- Allowlists, blocklists, plate search, exports, relay actions, and menu paths are not identical on every system.
- Do not copy server IDs, ports, exposure values, or credentials from a guide for different hardware.
- Save the original configuration and final test images.
